Web hosting refers to the storing of the files that make up your website, as well as making them available on the web. Maintenance is making minor changes to the web pages as well as monitoring your website for problems and fix them as they crop up. ( A major change - such as adding new pages or changing the "look and feel" of a site - is not included in maintenance.) We also supply daily, weekly and cumulative reports on the visitors to your site. These reports are always available on a private password protected area on your website.
We offer 4 types of hosting possible:
- A shared server: We host a number of different Websites on the same server. They share the resources of the server. This is the most common and inexpensive scenario. It works well for us because we monitor the servers continuously, and when the response times start to slow down, we upgrade our resources as needed. Check the sites in our portfolio for their speed. We use this for some very important websites, and it has worked out very well for many years!
- A dedicated, co-located server: We set up a server for you at our location, and your website is the only website running on the server. The key advantage is speed. You have 100% of the server resources available at any time. If the site slows down, you can add more servers, or more memory, or more CPUs. The disadvantage is cost. We usually recommend that you start on a shared server, and will tell you when your site gets so busy that it has the potential to interfere with other sites on the shared server - in which case we will ask you to go for the dedicated server!
- A dedicated server: We set up a server for you at Your location. We manage the server(s) for you remotely over the internet connection. We only recommend this if you have a special need, such as broadcasting live audio / video, or connecting to a traditional "brick and mortar" store's database - so your website can automatically know what inventory you have on site. We can set it up so that you can run your entire business - both "real world" and "internet" from the same website!
- Multiple geographically separated servers : this option is the most expensive, but it supplies the highest availability. If one server is down, the other takes over. With the other 2 options above, there is always a chance that a problem at the server location could interrupt service. Luckily, that doesn't happen often. Due to the nature of the technology, ALL web sites will have down time. Our servers are down for scheduled maintenance for about 2 minutes each day (around 2am), and occasionally unscheduled maintenance for software updates or failure of the server or hard drives. Once in a while, the internet connection goes down. Our longest outage ever was about 1 day. Most last only a few minutes and are hardly noticed. We recommend this option for mission critical sites, where being down for an hour would cost you more money than the cost of setting up this option for a year. Note that even this option may have some down time, as there have been interuptions in the internet itself, during large blackouts or storms.
